What does the future of general practice look like?
This article from the RCGP is a positive step in the right direction for remote medicine and the sustainability of general practice, as they take a realistic look at the future of telemedicine. Preserving the core of general practice and the relationships we have with our patients, while not jeopardising the recent progress we have made in remote medicine is at the heart of these recommendations.
They put forward the idea of a total triage system in which patients are triaged to who they see, as well as how they are seen. This formalises what a lot of us have been doing for some time. Some key points for our future success in telemedicine are listed:
. Continued financial investment (in technology and people)
. Constant reviews (of clinical care and satisfaction)
. Training and guidance (of patients, staff and clinicians)
. Targeted strategies to support equality (to address the digital divide)
. Ongoing research (to critique, support and propel change)
